Although the government has designated approximately $400 million to help the poultry farmers in need, the bird-flu has killed more than 38 million birds, 32 million of which are egg-laying hens, reported wsj.com.

Americans are facing an increase in egg prices, which have jumped almost 85 percent, and wholesale turkey costs, up at least 4.5 percent, in comparison to prices one year ago, according to wsj.com.

The spread of Avian influenza is being attributed by researchers to the feces of wild ducks and geese, who are travelling to the Midwest during their migration period, although no humans have been diagnosed with the disease, according to wsj.com.
