As the much ballyhooed solar eclipse of 2017 gets closer, Amazon has been forced to offer refunds to buyers who may have purchased counterfeit protective eyewear from the company to view the phenomenon.

According to an ABC report , third-party sellers offering to sell solar eclipse glasses have been asked to provide documentation to ensure that the products “were compliant with relevant safety standards.” Sellers who could not do that have since been taken off Amazon’s site and refunds are being offered to anyone who may have purchased from them.

In an effort to ensure the safety of those viewing the solar eclipse, the American Astronomical Society (AAS) has issued a list of approved companies that sell eclipse glasses that have been tested for quality and safety.

The AAS notes that not wearing glasses, or wearing improper eyewear can lead to “serious eye injury, (and) perhaps blindness).”

For the first time in nearly four decades, North America will experience a total solar eclipse, the first to be visible from the United States since 1979. The sun will disappear behind the moon, turning daylight into twilight, and leading to a quick plunge in temperature before streamers of light streaking across the sky around the moon's silhouette.

The Aug. 21 eclipse will also be the first to sweep across the entire country since 1918.

"A total eclipse of the sun belongs on everyone's bucket list," said Hudson Valley resident and renowned astronomer and science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson of North Salem.
