NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Did you know that one of the Top Ten Facial spots named by the editors of Westchester Magazine in 2011, was North Salem’s Derma Glow ?
Jennifer and JoAnna Sciarrino, twins so identical that they often say the same thing at the same time, opened the day spa on Route 121 three years ago and already have an extensive clientele from nearby towns.
“We were both always interested in aesthetics because our mother was,” they said, not quite in unison. “Our grandmother said, ‘Never go into business for yourselves – you’ll lose your weekends.’”
But the twins were ambitious. After studying cosmetology at BOCES, they went on to the Long Island Nail and Skin Care Institute and became fully licensed aestheticians by the age of 20.
They started by renting a private room at a local Long Island hair salon, then broadened the business to making house calls and special occasion makeovers.
When the family moved to North Salem four years ago, they decided to ignore Grandma’s sound advice and searched for an ideal setting for a day spa. They found one, just beside 121 Kitchen. By 2012, they had earned a citation on Westchester Magazine’s list of the 16 Top Day Spas.
What is the best way to take care of your skin? “You have to keep up with it. That is, maintain it at home between facials,” said Jennifer – or JoAnna. “And you’ve go to hydrate,” said JoAnna – or Jennifer.
Their most popular facial right now is the 75-minute Ultimate Glow Facial. They also offer a 40-minute Quickie, if you are in a hurry. Various types of massage, nail treatments, makeup applications, waxing and specials like a Mothers Day package and monthly special discounts fill out the services.
Now that they are 28 years old, in business and have “lost their weekends,” how is their social life? “We both have boyfriends,” said Jennifer. “Hers is a fireman and mine is a cop.”
