NEW YORK, N.Y. -- NBC Universal severed ties with Donald Trump on Monday following controversial comments the billionaire businessman and presidential candidate made about Mexican immigrants that sparked a backlash from Hispanic groups.

NBC will no longer air the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, which are partially owned by Trump, following a similar step by Univision.

"At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values," the company said in a statement. "Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump."

Trump said he will sue Univision and possibly NBC as well.

"They will stand behind lying (former "NBC Nightly News" anchor) Brian Williams but won't stand behind people that tell it like it is, as unpleasant as that may be," said Trump.

Trump had previously announced he would no be involved in the NBC show, "The Apprentice," in which he popularized the line, "You're fired!" while a presidential candidate.

NBC Universal's move comes after remarks among immigration made two weeks ago following Trump's announcement he would seek the Republican presidential nomination.

"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best," Trump said in his presidential announcement speech. "They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're rapists, and some, I assume, are good people."
