Barger is an attorney whose practice focuses on children with special needs. He often represents families in disputes with a New York or New Jersey public school district, trying to secure the services that will best help a child succeed. Friends of Karen provides vital, practical and comprehensive support, at no cost, to New York tri-state families who are caring for a child battling cancer or another life-threatening illness, from diagnosis through treatment.
Barger was especially attracted to the Friends of Karen’s long-term commitment to a family, often for years.
“It’s impossible not to get behind Friends of Karen’s mission,” Barger said. “What person on the planet wouldn’t understand the impact they have on a family in crisis?” “Friends of Karen has grown into the go-to organization for families in crisis, and I know Paul will play a meaningful role in our continued growth,” says Pamela Hervey, president of Friends of Karen’s board of directors. “He works with children and their families to give them the best chance to succeed in school and after. There’s a lot of synergy between what Paul does and what Friends of Karen does.”
Barger talks on the organization supporting families. “The fact that the organization supports the family as a whole appeals to me,” said Barger. “It’s so tangible: giving relief to a sick child, their siblings and their parents by taking away a pile of bills or sending back-to-school supplies or all the other things Friends of Karen does.” Barger is a member of the New York, New Jersey, District of Columbia and American Bar associations. He makes frequent presentations to statewide organizations and to parent groups about issues arising under the Individuals With Disabilities Act and associated laws.
