Affordable Housing Group Will Renovate North Salem Home

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- ?Allied Community Enterprises is prepared to renovate a long-vacant house to create affordable housing in northern Westchester.

The single-family house, locally known as the Mustard House, stood vacant when North Salem Supervisor Warren Lucas approached ACE’s executive director, Joan Arnold.

Arnold, a longtime developer of affordable housing in Westchester, immediately saw the benefits as well as the challenges of converting the house into viable affordable housing. Arnold suspected Mustard House, like many properties in Westchester, had a failed septic system. With funding from the Westchester Community Foundation and the Regional Plan Association, ACE determined the property’s septic failure and designed a new system.

Mustard House’s remediated system will incorporate a new Soil Air waster water treatment system and will be energy-efficient for an income-qualifying homeowner.

“ACE believes in housing that is in scale with the community, and often for a nonprofit housing developer, it means one house at time," said ACE’s president, Peter Russell.

"We start with rehabbing this small house in Croton Falls. We are working with several local municipalities to repurpose older structures into housing that is affordable. We will use the new decentralized septic solutions in the northern Westchester area in new small houses that give a range of affordability, one house at a time.”

ACE will celebrate the Mustard House acquisition at Ode to the Small House, a fundraiser at the Kittle House on Sunday, Nov. 16, from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

The Kittle House’s atrium room will provide the environment for its food and drinks. Westchester-based Shovel Ready String Band will play.

Katonah’s Dan Herman, one of ACE's former presidents, is a principal of the band along with his wife, Beth Falk. More than $1,000 worth of wine will be raffled in a wine grab, and North Salem-crafted holiday wreaths will be available.
