"Crossing Borders in Performance" will continue on Friday, March 20, at 8 p.m. with the Zem Audu Quartet, featuring Nigerian saxophonist Zem Audu, who explores the intersection of African music and jazz, in conversation with exhibiting artist Osi Audu.
On Saturday, March 21, at 8 p.m., Monika Jalili will present a 20th-century Persian folk and popular music performance, plus a conversation with exhibiting artist Nazanin Hedayat Monroe. Jalili brings to life the history of Iranian culture through music and poetry. Using traditional and nontraditional instruments, the musicians of her ensemble combine their influences to present original interpretations of this music.
On Friday, March 27, at 8 p.m. Dominican poet and performance artist Francis Mateo will perform from his poetry in English and Spanish with his ensemble featuring keyboard, bass and percussion, with conversations with exhibiting artist Pepe Coronado to present Dominican history, identity and its expression through the arts.
On Saturday, March 28, at 8 p.m. Margaret Leng Tan will present “East-West Encounters, the Concert Piano Reimagined” with a conversation with exhibiting artist Bibiana Huang Matheis. Tan, a highly visible and visionary pianist, has established herself as a major force within the American avant-garde.
“Crossing Borders: Memory and Heritage in a New America” presents the work of first-generation and new American artists who explore memory, identity and cross-culturalism within New York’s immigrant community. Many of the performances feature talks with exhibiting artists to explore the exhibition’s themes.
Admission is $20 for nonmembers and $15 for ArtsWestchester members and students with ID. All performances are at ArtsWestchester, 31 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains.
