Woman, 38, Accused Of Viciously Attacking Two On Long Island, Police Say

A Long Island woman was arrested for allegedly attacking two people during two separate incidents causing severe injuries to both victims.

According to detectives, the first incident took place on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at 1:20 p.m. Fanny Oviedo-Canales, age 38, of Hempstead, followed a woman, 28, into a stairwell located on 590 Fulton Ave., in Hempstead and punched the victim in the face, said the Nassau County Police.

 While being verbally abusive the defendant also scratched the victim's face, causing bruising, scratches, and substantial pain, police said.

Oviedo-Canales then grabbed the victim by the neck with her hands and applied pressure making it difficult for the victim to breathe, as she forcefully slammed her head into the wall, placing the victim in fear for her life. 

As a result of this attack, the victim had neck pain from the pressure applied to her neck by the defendant, police said.

The victim's three children, all juveniles, were present during the incident.

The second attack took. place on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 11:30 p.m., when Oviedo-Canales stabbed a male victim, 36, in the chest, in front of 400B Fulton Ave., police said.

 The victim suffered an open stab wound to his chest, swelling, bleeding, and substantial pain. The victim was transported to da local hospital for treatment.

An investigation led detectives to locate Oviedo-Canales at her apartment, 100 Jerusalem Avenue, Apt. B26, and with the assistance of Hempstead Police Department and placed her into custody on Monday, Feb. 1.

Oviedo-Canales was charged with:

  • Three counts of assault
  • Strangulation
  • Possession of a dangerous weapon
  • Endangering the welfare of a child.
