The senator is inviting area residents to meet people from around the 40th district, and to honor a group of extraordinary women for their acts of altruism, selflessness and bravery. In addition to the Women Of Distinction, Murphy will be awarding the state Senate Liberty Medal to 20-year-old Riley DeJong, of Lewisboro, for her acts of valor at the site of the Metro-North train crash Feb. 3 in Valhalla.

DeJong is an EMT with the Lewisboro Volunteer Ambulance Corps who was a passenger in the back of the ill-fated train. Once off the train, she ran to the point of impact and began to treat the wounded. She did not grant interviews to the press, but will now tell her story at the event.

The state Senate Liberty Medal is one of the highest civilian honors a New Yorker can receive. Similar to the national Congressional Gold Medal, the award is given to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers.

The Chappaqua Library is at 195 S. Greeley Ave., Chappaqua.
