The North Salem Bridle Trail Association (NSBTA), which manages more than 100 miles of trails in the area, is holding a fund-raiser on Oct. 5 that is set to feature Tyson, who has a series on FOX called "Cosmos: A Space Time Odyssey."

"It's going to be completely different from a lot of fund-raisers that you see that revolve around bands and dinners," said Charlotte Harris, president of NSBTA.. "Dr. deGrasse Tyson is a well-known scientist but it won't be limited to one particular audience. We're going to get North Salem High School involved with the students and their audio/visual department. It's going to be for all ages, very fun and educational."

All  the proceeds of the event will help support the trail network in North Salem. and Ridgefield. According to Linda Tyson, the treasurer of NSBTA, the network is made up of private land and land owners in the area open up the trails on their property to the members of trail association and public.

"The proceeds go to maintain the trail network covering damage by storms and erosion," said Tyson. "For example, during Superstorm Sandy, hundreds of trees came down and blocked trails. And they had to be cleaned up and removed. A variety of things have to be done to maintain the integrity of the trail network." Added Harris. "There is insurance costs and taxes that have to be paid, as well as very minor administrative costs." The fund-raiser will be held at Old Salem Farm in North Salem. General Admission tickets are $75. The price includes a 90-minute talk and a Q&A session. All-Access tickets are $200. That includes reserved seating, private reception, book signing, and hors d'oeuvres and drinks. For more information, check out the NSBTA website.
