NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- In celebration of National School Library Month, Pequenakonck Elementary School is planning a display location for a unique mural by the famous author/illustrator Robert McCloskey, who lived in North Salem in the 1960s.
The celebration will take place on Thursday, April 24, at 2:15 p.m in the PQ Hallway outside the multipurpose room.
McCloskey is the famed author and illustrator and two-time Caldecott Award winner of picture books loved by Americans for decades. The mallard family from his novel "Make Way for Ducklings" is commemorated in the Boston Public Garden by bronze sculptures created for the park's 150th anniversary.
PQ Elementary School librarian Noel MacCarry received confirmation this year that the mural was created as payment for dentistry services in the late 1950s.
For years, the mural hung on the walls of a Croton Falls dentist before coming to the school.
Students, librarians, teachers and members of the North Salem Historical Society will attend.
In addition to the above event, PQ Elementary School will hold an assembly where faculty members present the winning book in a two-year reading event called the Tall Tree Award on Wednesday, May 21.
