The program, which is inspired and funded by the Keeler Library Visiting Committee and the John R. and Dorothy Caples Fund, was a “huge hit” in its debut last year, when more than 100 kids attended. Keeler Library Director Carolyn Reznick said she expects a similar turnout this year.
STEAM Fest encourages a contemporary learning atmosphere through a technology-based extension of “do it yourself” culture. It stresses new and unique applications of technology and encourages forward thinking. There is also a strong focus on using and learning practical skills and applying them creatively with these new tools.
This year’s STEAM Fest activities include 3D Printing, Vinyl Portraiture, Soldering, Makey Makey Music, Rockets, 3D Scanning Station, Spaghetti Challenge, Ready Set Design, and Paper Speakers.
“We have some new activities this year including Makey Makey, Paper Speakers, Spaghetti Challenge, Vinyl Portraiture and more,” said Reznick.
“The very popular Soldering and Rockets will be back again. We are particularly happy that most of these activities require hands-on work by the children. Very little will be done online on Saturday,” she said.
Reznick added that the event is a great place for the community’s youth and their parents to come together to learn and engage.
“My favorite aspect is the community involvement,” she said. “We love having the parents and children in the library. We also have a lot of volunteers lined up including North Salem high school kids, library trustees and more.”
