WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Apple picking is a prominent part of the fall, along with the appearance of pumpkins, mums and colorful foliage.

For Westchester and Putnam residents, there are several places to choose from for going apple picking.

Outhouse Orchards in North Salem, which includes a vista of the surrounding area, is one example, with several trees available.

Jesse Outhouse, a member of the family that has owned the place for generations, said the apple ripening schedule varies by variety. He explained that McIntosh is the first, ripening in early September, with Cortland towards the end of September to early October. By the second week of October, he added, picking for Red Delicious typically begins.

Outhouse Orchards, on its website , also lists Rhode Island Greenings, Rome, Red Delicious and Baldwin, with the latter three available in October.

Outhouse Orchards' apple picking season typically lasts from Labor Day weekend, with the hope to make it to Columbus Day, Jesse Outhouse explained.

His brother, Andrew Outhouse, noted that they are in the process of replanting the orchard to gain more apple bushels.

Jesse Outhouse described the activity as “super busy in September because it's been beautiful every weekend.”

Nearby Stuart's Fruit Farm in Somers lists September apple picking varieties that include McIntosh, Macoun and Cortland, and October varieties that include Red Delicious, Fuji and Golden Delicious.

Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm in Yorktown, which lists an apple picking season from the first week of September to the second or third week in October , includes McIntosh, Baldwin, Fuji, Empire, Golden Delicious and Red Delicious.

Although Salinger's Orchard in Southeast does not state that it has Pick-Your-Own for apples, it does list nearly available 20 varieties that range by week. Jonagold, Fuji, Northern Spy and Granny Smith are among those available.
