Greyston Bakery CEO Turns Yonkers Residents Into Breadwinners

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Mike Brady, CEO of Yonkers-based Greyston Bakery, has an innovative hiring process, allowing everyone the opportunity to get a piece of the pie.

Brady developed a business model, which provides employment opportunities to less fortunate residents, regardless of their background or work history. “Greyston is the country’s leading social enterprise because we give everyone the chance to prove their value, regardless of their status outside the workplace,” said Brady.

Brady was named president and CEO of Greyston Bakery in 2012 and has helped poverty-stricken residents of Yonkers find work through the company’s Open Hiring™ model. Open Hiring™ creates opportunities for people who have often been excluded by filling jobs without judging applicants based on their previous work history.

Although Greyston is a for-profit company, it's owned by the nonprofit parent organization, Greyston Foundation -- which benefits the community through programs like workforce development, community gardens, early childhood learning centers and more.

“The momentum behind socially-minded and sustainable business practices has never been stronger,” said Brady. “This could not be happening at a more critical time as we search for answers to the challenges of joblessness and poverty, which are preventing good people from leading lives of self-sufficiency.”

Greyston Bakery, which opened its doors in 1982, has seen its revenues increase by more than 50 percent under Brady’s tenure. The organization was also recognized as New York State’s first Benefit Corporation, which is a business that has a social mission that positively impacts society, workers, the community and the environment.

Brady’s strategic initiatives have resulted in national distribution of Greyston Bakery’s brownies and cookies at Whole Foods Markets. The company has also strengthened its 25-year relationship with Ben & Jerry’s, which uses Greyston brownies in its iconic Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream.

“I look forward to continuing my work with the outstanding team at Greyston to address social problems and to set an example for other like-minded organizations and companies in Westchester and beyond,” said Brady. "To that end, The Center for Open Hiring™ at Greyston is being created to facilitate the widespread adoption of Open Hiring™," he said. “It’s what responsible businesses need to do.”
