Last Call: Eateries Invited To Participate In Hudson Valley Restaurant Week

Dozens of restaurants have already signed up to participate in the culinary marathon known as Hudson Valley Restaurant Week, but there is still room at the table, organizers said.

Daily Voice talked to Hudson Valley Restaurant Week co-founder Janet Crawshaw and area restaurant owners and attendees last fall. Registration is still open for the upcoming spring event.

The last call to register for the spring event ends this Sunday, Jan. 15.

More than 70 eateries (so far) will be serving up dishes that emphasize New York’s “sustainable, seasonal” fruits, veggies, meats and grains, organizers said.

Now in its 11th year, the biannual event features prix fixe, three-course dinners and lunches.

It will run, this year, from March 6-19 and Oct. 30-Nov. 12.

Janet Crawshaw, its co-founder, said the event gets more popular and more profitable each year.

In 2016, she said, it generated $10.2 million in sales revenue and about $844,000 in tax revenue.

Not only does it give the public a chance to try new restaurants – at a discount – it benefits local businesses, farmers, producers and purveyors, Crawshaw said.

Last year, restaurants participating in the event reported a 25 percent to 38 percent increase in business, she said.

More than 200 eateries took part last fall, serving an estimated 250,000 dinners.

“The Hudson Valley region stands as a focal point of the craft food and beverage movement and it is our passion to support those efforts,” Crawshaw said.

In 1998, Crawshaw and Jerry Novesky launched The Valley Table, a quarterly magazine that celebrates the agricultural heritage and cuisine of the region.

They, along with a board made up of chefs, restaurateurs and tourism leaders, established the HVRW in 2006 with the intent of fueling the locavore movement.

Participating restaurants this year are in Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties.

A kick-off party for participants and purveyors will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Half Moon restaurant in Dobbs Ferry.
