The Opening Day exhibits include the works of Alex Guofeng Cao, whose pictures appear to be photographs, but are mosaics that create a complete image by repeating an icon. Ultimately, the mosaic becomes a portrait of an iconic figure, such as Marilyn Monroe or John F. Kennedy. For a closer look, see the artist's website.

Ceramic sculptor Leigh Taylor Mickelson’s work was inspired by the beauty and intricacies of nature. “The elements of natural forms act as a metaphor for the spiritual, emotional and physical extremes that exist within ourselves, our love and our family units,” she says.

The third exhibit will display Chinese brush paintings by 20 members of the Oriental Brush Artists Guild, a group of more than 50 artists from the tri-state area. Chinese brush painting is a serene discipline and considered a great source of peace and accomplishment to those who do it. This exhibit is a juried show and will run until June 16. Artist Frank Liao will be on hand to give a demonstration of brush painting at 2 p.m.

North Salem’s Hammond Museum and Japanese Garden was a gift to the town from former resident Natalie Hays Hammond, an orientalist and art connoisseur. The museum offers a variety of exhibits throughout the spring, summer and fall, as well as classes in various art disciplines, concerts, children’s programs and an annual Blessing of the Animals. During the season, it is open Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

Memberships are $35 for an individual, $50 for a family. The admission fee for non-members is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and children under 12 are free. The Hammond Museum and Japanese Stroll Garden is at 28 Deveau Road, North Salem.
