SOMERS, N.Y. - The Daily Somers Facebook page asked readers to rate their favorite local pizzerias. Here are the results.
Patsys was the winner, with special mention of how nice Patsy is. Fratellis came in a close second. Il Forno was right behind Fratellis and there was a smattering of votes for Peppinos in Somers, Four Brothers in Mahopac, Portofino in Goldens Bridge and Sals in Carmel.
Patsy Femia, of Patsys Pizza and Pasta, made his first pizza at the age of 10 in the Bronx. In fact, his restaurants slogan is, Bringing quality pizza from the boroughs to the burbs.
Femias pizza oven is over 45 years old. Its a Bakers Pride, he said. They dont make them any more. His chicken, bacon and ranch pizza is popular, but the Margarita is the most popular. Old-fashioned pizza is the best, he said.
Facebook readers commended Patsys for its good food and pleasant staff. Portofinos was commended on the size of its slices. One reader said, Ive heard they put a few plates under the slice to hold it up. Fratellis was admired for the quality of its crust.
Ralph and Andrea Piccolo co-own Fratellis Pizza & Pasta, hence the name: fratelli means brothers in Italian. A third brother owns the Piccolo Cafe in Mahopac.
Ralph Piccolo came to the United States from Italy in 1972 at the age of 13. Three years later, he was making pizzas professionally. I make good pizzas, he said, because Im from Naples. And thats what we do.
His personal favorite is the Margarita and it is a customer favorite as well. I like a pizza without too much stuff on it, he explained. That way you can pick it up.
Piccolo is especially proud of his dough. I dont use anything but a little olive oil, salt, yeast and flour. And thats it. No sugar. No dairy products. Some people add eggs to make the dough crisper, but Id never.
No matter which restaurant you prefer, it seems we can safely say that Somers is blessed with a half-dozen really good pizzerias. Buon appetito!
