Pizza Picks By Local Connoisseurs in Somers

SOMERS, N.Y. - The Daily Somers Facebook page asked readers to rate their favorite local pizzerias. Here are the results.

Patsy’s was the winner, with special mention of how nice Patsy is. Fratelli’s came in a close second. Il Forno was right behind Fratelli’s and there was a smattering of votes for Peppino’s in Somers, Four Brothers in Mahopac, Portofino in Goldens Bridge and Sal’s in Carmel.

Patsy Femia, of Patsy’s Pizza and Pasta, made his first pizza at the age of 10 in the Bronx. In fact, his restaurant’s slogan is, “Bringing quality pizza from the boroughs to the burbs.”

Femia’s pizza oven is over 45 years old. “It’s a Baker’s Pride,” he said. “They don’t make them any more.” His chicken, bacon and ranch pizza is popular, but the Margarita is the most popular. “Old-fashioned pizza is the best,” he said.

Facebook readers commended Patsy’s for its good food and pleasant staff. Portofino’s was commended on the size of its slices. One reader said, “I’ve heard they put a few plates under the slice to hold it up.” Fratelli’s was admired for the quality of its crust.

Ralph and Andrea Piccolo co-own Fratelli’s Pizza & Pasta, hence the name: fratelli means brothers in Italian. A third brother owns the Piccolo Cafe in Mahopac.

Ralph Piccolo came to the United States from Italy in 1972 at the age of 13. Three years later, he was making pizzas professionally. “I make good pizzas,” he said, “because I’m from Naples. And that’s what we do.”

His personal favorite is the Margarita and it is a customer favorite as well. “I like a pizza without too much stuff on it,” he explained. “That way you can pick it up.”

Piccolo is especially proud of his dough. “I don’t use anything but a little olive oil, salt, yeast and flour. And that’s it. No sugar. No dairy products. Some people add eggs to make the dough crisper, but I’d never.”

No matter which restaurant you prefer, it seems we can safely say that Somers is blessed with a half-dozen really good pizzerias. Buon appetito!
