WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Late night television legend and North Salem resident David Letterman announced he will retire from his CBS "Late Show" spot in 2015, according to multiple reports.

Letterman, 66, has hosted the CBS late night talk show since 1993 and an NBC version of the show that aired after Johnny Carson from 1982-1993. He is the longest-serving late-night host in television history, surpassing Carson's record last year.

Letterman reportedly made the announcement to the audience at Thursday's taping of the show and news of the announcement trickled out via Twitter.

He informed CBS president and CEO Les Moonves of the decision before making the announcement, according to the article.

Letterman's longtime bandleader, Paul Shaffer, will also reportedly retire.

Letterman is also a former resident of New Canaan, Conn.

I think that Johnny Carson was the best of all the late night hosts. He was funny and classy and you could tell that even if he didn't agree, he respected his guests.

What di he FIND Fairfield County to EXPENSIVE to live in ?????

Funny? Think George Carlin, Richard Pryor..this guy was a condescending, unfunny political hack..keep the drummer!!!

"longest-serving" late-night host? Does that phrase strike anyone else as odd?

Good one about Leno taking his place, haha! That would be great, Leno was our favorite, miss him every week night!

BUH-BYE!!!!! Don't let the door hit you on the way out....

I loved the way he mocked and humiliated the Republicans. Of course they just give so much ammunition.

Isn't letterman Larry King's uncle?

As I said: He will be missed by those of us who love humor.

Good Riddance...but keep the drummer!

David Letterman is sooooo funny and smart and really brilliant. He will be missed by those of us who love humor.
