NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- For the third straight year, North Salem Boy Scouts Troop 1 have earned the Waubeeka Award for "being the best troop present at Camp Read, Waubeeka Camp," according to a press release.

The troop won the award for week 5 of the summer in Brant Lake, according to the release. Representatives with Troop 1 said the scouts earned more than 100 merit badges, according to the release.

"To earn the honor the troop needed to excel in a daily 36 point inspection of their campsite, participate and achieve high scores in competitions such as fire building, a cook-off, a quadrathalon (climbing, archery, running and swimming,) rifle shooting and building a working trebuchet," representatives said in the release. "Each day the troop had opportunities to write creative stories, odes and poems about camp staff to receive additional points. Their community service project this year was to cut down dead trees and saw them into lengths to be used by the Cubs and Webelos attending camp the following week for their campfires."

The scout leadership team included Senior Patrol Leader Mason Goodman, Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders John Finnigan and Matthew Posa, and Patrol Leaders Thomas Groff and Richard O'Leary, according to the release.

"This year the leadership were outstanding at teaching and being mentors for the younger patrol members," representatives said in the release. "They were exceptional role models. Adult leaders present included Anthony Giachetto, Jim Posa, Neil Merit, David Groff and Rich Goodman, all Assistant Scout Masters."

Scout leaders noted that the North Salem troop "has become a well-oiled machine" and that 14 members of the troop finished an 80 mile trek at Philmont New Mexico last summer, according to the release.
