CROTON FALLS, N.Y. - Winter doldrums may be threatening but The Schoolhouse Theater is doing its bit to keep us entertained until spring arrives.
Sunday, January 15 will bring the 24th Annual Winter Jazz Concert, featuring Houston Person and his quartet. Winner of the prestigious Eubie Blake Jazz Award, Person has recorded more than 75 albums and has accompanied the greats: Johnny Hammond, Etta Jones, Lena Horne, Lou Rawls, Horace Silver, Dakota Staton and more. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, January 21 will feature a screening of Fish: A Memoir of a Boy in a Mans Prison , based upon the book of the same name. It is the story of T. J. Parsell, who spent a good deal of his youth in prison but survived to go to college, have a successful career as a software executive, become a human rights activist and write a memoir of his early life. Now a student at NYUs Graduate Film School, Parsell is turning his award-winning book into a feature film. On January 21 he will show two short films based on his story, plus a documentary about the root causes of crime and intergenerational incarceration. The show starts at 7 p.m.
Sunday, February 5 offers an afternoon of intrigue and espionage in a reading of the historical drama, An Inquiry in Florence by newcomer playwright Barton Kuntsler. Part fact, part fiction, it is based on an actual meeting in Florence during the Inquisition between poet John Milton and the blind, aged Galileo. The author will be on hand for a Talk- Back afterwards. The curtain goes up at 3 p.m.
Sunday, April 1 brings a screening of Lost Bohemia , the story of the landmarked artists studios above Carnegie Hall. At various times residents included Marilyn Monroe, Isadora Duncan, Norman Mailer, Marlon Brando and George Balanchine. This is the only filmed record of the studios, which were converted to office space when Carnegie Hall was rehabilitated around 2000. The audience is invited to stay afterwards for a Talk-Back with director, Josef Astor. The show starts at 3 p.m.
N.B. The date of the Lost Bohemia screening has been changed from February 18 at 7:30 p.m. to April 1 at 3 p.m.
