NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – North Salem’s Joseph Tyson, 79, has been inducted into Sen. Greg Ball’s Veterans’ Hall of Fame.

Speaking at the March 2 induction ceremony, Ball said, “These men and women have been hand-picked by their communities because they chose a path of courage, honor, integrity and bravery -- a path that helped shape America as we know it, protecting our way of live and liberty. America is not a great country because of its politicians. It’s a great country because of our veterans.”

Born and educated in Brooklyn, Tyson enlisted in the United States Army at 18 and served in Korea as a paratrooper. Later promoted to technical sergeant, Tyson was injured when a bomb hit his bunker and subsequently spent nearly a year in a body cast at Walter Reed Hospital.

Tyson’s military awards included a Bronze Battle Star, a Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

For more than 50 years, Tyson has been active in the Brewster Knights of Columbus, where he served two years as the Grand Knight. He is also a member of the North Salem American Legion Post 1866 and served as First Vice Commander for more than a dozen years. Together with Post Commander Herb Geller, Tyson traditionally leads the North Salem Memorial Day Parade.
