Letter: North Salem Schools Need More Transparency

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- The Daily Voice accepts signed and original letters to the editor. To submit your letter email northsalem@dailyvoice.com.

To the editor:

The North Salem Board of Education refuses to allow the public to review the entire budget prior to board approval. Once the entire budget is presented to the public it is too late to make any changes.

As North Salem enters what is a three-month process in preparing and receiving approval of a budget for the 2014-15 fiscal year, they once again have prepared a budget calendar which makes the presentation to the public of the entire budget a meaningless action. By the time the budget is presented to the public in its entirety for the first time it has already been approved by the board.  According to the board it is then too late to make any subsequent adjustments before the public vote on the budget.

Even though we are at the very beginning of the budget process and there is more than adequate opportunity to make changes to the budget preparation schedule, the board and the superintendent have refused to change the schedule so that the entire budget, as it may have been adjusted during the budget process, can be presented in its entirety to the public.

This makes the public presentation a complete sham; and the comments by the public unimportant to the board.
