NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Another member of North Salem’s Boy Scout Troop 1 will soon  join the ranks of Eagle Scout. Fifteen-year-old Christopher Woloshyn, a 10th-grader at North Salem High School, has embarked on a project to improve and beautify the North Salem Veterans Memorial at the Westchester Exceptional Children’s School (WEC).

“I was thinking about doing something at the new St. Joseph’s Church, but Monsignor Moore suggested maybe WEC needed some work,” Woloshyn explained. “So I went there, and immediately noticed that the Veterans Memorial needed some fixing up.”

The plan is to build a flagstone patio, about 150 square feet, around the memorial, then enhancing it with foliage and flowers. “I wanted foliage that would bloom around Memorial Day because of the annual ceremony, and still be deer-resistant,” Woloshyn said. He ended up choosing fountain grass, Russian sage, catmint, gold thread cypress and phlox.

The first work session took place on Sunday, when Woloshyn led a team of 13 fellow scouts and five adults for more than two hours. He estimates it will take five or six sessions to complete the project.

The scout had been warned by WEC Board Member John Caralyus to beware of a Space Capsule, buried in the vicinity by a WEC class in 1976. The scouts did indeed find the capsule and worked carefully around it, leaving it to be discovered by posterity.

Woloshyn says the project takes a lot of perseverance and hard work. “You can’t not try hard, but it’s very rewarding."

His mother Lisa Woloshyn explained that her son will be the seventh Eagle Scout in the family. "My husband, his three brothers and two of my son's cousins are Eagle Scouts," she said. "I'd say that the eagles soar in this one family."
