North Salem Grad Earns Chamber Of Commerce Award

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. — Linda DosSantos, a 2012 graduate of North Salem High School, has been awarded the North Salem Chamber of Commerce Scholarship for Outstanding Service to the Community.

“It’s a $500 scholarship,” said Chamber of Commerce Treasurer Tim Purdy. “We give the award annually.”

Secretary Christine Renda added, “Every year it goes to a person who has contributed to the community and has given his or her time and effort to the business realm.”

Chamber of Commerce member Michele Leasure, owner of Salem Sports and Spine added, “Linda is a good student and she’s done a lot of work for the community. She’s been involved in the mock legislature session and in the band and she’s an altogether nice person. She deserves it.”

DosSantos, a winner of the Girl Scout Gold Award for her Pets for Vets project, is spending her summer working at North Salem's Mountain Lakes Camp, where she has already performed hundreds of hours of community service. This summer she is in charge of the games program for children from pre-K to seventh grade. Part of her responsibility is teaching fair play and sportsmanship.

DosSantos received the President’s Volunteer Award for her Pets for Vets project, which entailed preparing emergency pet care kits for the dogs of servicemen suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.

Additionally, she has been active in peer tutoring, assisted in gym classes at the Pequenakonck School, assisted at the alter at St. John’s Chapel and has been a student representative to the Foundation for Learning.

This fall, DosSantos will begin her freshman year at New York University, where she plans to major in psychology.
