North Salem Hosts Erik Nicoletti Film Festival

Emory Nager is a freshman at North Salem High School.

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - On October 21st, North Salem Middle/High School will be sponsoring its first ever Erik Nicoletti Film Festival in honor of the 2007 graduate. Julie, Erik’s sister, came up with the idea as a tribute to her brother who was tragically killed in a 2009 hit and run accident while a junior at the University of Tampa.

She remembered how Erik always went out of his way to help others feel included. She recalled how excited Erik was when he attended the 2009 Cannes Film Festival in France and how he hoped to become a screenwriter.

She thought that a movie festival would be a great way to help raise money for a film production and broadcast studio to be named in Erik’s honor.

Erik’s mother, Dorothy, developed the idea for the broadcast studio after she approached Assistant Principal George Bovino about setting up something in her son’s memory at the high school.

Dr. Bovino fondly remembers Erik as “fun loving and a good student.” Dr. Bovino mentioned that he regularly had to go to BOCES to create broadcasts because North Salem lacked a facility. "That is what I'd love to have here in the school,” she said to Bovino. The hope is with funds raised from the film festival and other donations there will be enough money to start building the broadcast studio.

The public is invited and encouraged to watch the films at the North Salem High School auditorium starting with "Up" (rated PG) at 3:30 PM and" Batman, The Dark Knight" (rated PG-13) at 6:00 PM. These movies were chosen because they were among Erik’s favorites. The $10 suggested donation includes popcorn and bottled water.

Everyone hopes that the film festival will become an annual event and that the whole community will take part. If you cannot attend, please make a donation to:
