North Salem to Publish Arts and Literary Review

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- A new publication is on the horizon. It will be called Balanced Rock: The North Salem Review of Art, Photography and Literature, and it is the successor to 2011’s North Salem Review.

“We got off the ground with the North Salem Review but now we want to take it a step further,” said managing editor, Pam Pooley.

The first edition included prose and poetry, and the next edition will add art and photography.

“The library is eager to encourage emerging and established artists and writers to help create an outstanding publication for the sake of community creativity,” Pooley said.

Pooley described Balanced Rock as a showcase for writers and artists who live, study or work in Westchester, Putnam and Fairfield.

“We’ve brought in an editorial review staff, so it’s become a little more juried. It’s a full-color, elegant publication, created by professionals in the publishing business, who volunteer their time for this library-based project,” Pooley said.

Pooley was originally inspired during a visit to San Francisco, where she kept running into the West Marin Review, a literary arts journal sponsored and created by the local library. She thought, “We could do something like that.”

Since 2008 Pooley has moderated a writers’ workshop at the Ruth Keeler Library that meets roughly every three weeks.

“It’s a safe haven. There’s a regular group of people, aspiring writers, who keep returning. But it’s open to everyone. It’s free and there’s no need to register,” Pooley said. “People who make the effort to walk through the door should think, ‘my writing is significant.’ You may not be published but you are a writer.”

Pooley added that the new publication will consider any new work and that there is no particular theme. Financial support comes from advertisements, donations and the Friends of the Library.

All submissions must be sent electronically. There is a $10 fee for each, to be mailed to Pooley at the Ruth Keeler Library. Fiction and non-fiction must be 2,500 words or less. Art and photographs must be high-resolution 300 DPI JPEGs.

The deadline for submission is May 1. Guidelines are given in detail at the journal’s website . If you would like to get involved, need more information or want to place an advertisement call the Ruth Keeler Library at 914-669-5161.
