The subsequent years included gigs with Woody Herman, Frank Sinatra, Bill Evans, Quincy Jones, the Benny Goodman Sextet and at least a dozen other famous jazz musicians.
The North Salem Daily Voice asked Stamm to name his five favorite things about North Salem. Here are his answers:
1. The spirit of the town: It was wonderful the way the town pulled together these last two years of pretty horrific weather to take care of its citizens who experienced damage and outages from these storms. I am sure all of us are grateful to our Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Fire Department, our Building and road departments, our Police Department, our supervisor and town council, all of whom worked tirelessly for those of us who suffered due to these events.
2. The people: We moved to North Salem 35 years ago this May and raised our children here. We have continued the friendship formed through the years with families whose children grew up with ours as well as those formed through Nancy’s involvement with various organizations in town — the PTO when our girls were in school, as a trustee for the Open Land Foundation, three years on the Ambulance Corps, the years spent riding horses and more. We have also come to know many others who came to North Salem after us. So many fine people live in this town, and they make the town what it is.
3. The beauty of our environment: Need I say more? One has only to go out and walk, run, bike or ride a horse to get caught up by the beauty that surrounds us. Before moving to North Salem, I lived in Manhattan for 12 years, six of them with Nancy. Today, I travel a great deal to play my music and have to stay in cities and towns all over. There is no place like North Salem, and I always look forward to coming home. I never tire of the reservoir, the hills and the woodlands in which we live.
4. Ruth Keeler Memorial Library: Our town library and the people who staff it truly represent what this town is all about. They are always among the most helpful people in North Salem, always there for us. The library contributes so much to everyone. It is more than just a provider books and films. It serves as a meeting place for various organizations and affords us a space to gather for many functions. It provides Internet for many, is a place where people work and do research, and offers creative programs for a variety of groups. The library also presents interesting lectures for adults and, most important, entertaining and educational programs for children of all ages. In many ways, the library IS the center of our town.
5. The quality of life in North Salem: I appreciate our being close to a place like NYC. But what makes this so special is having NYC so close while living in our lovely area of rural beauty. I tell people in my travels about our town, but they find it difficult to believe that I live in such a quiet space, affording reflection and renewal, while being so close to one of the largest cities in the world. Living in North Salem is having it all – the city, the countryside and all the beautiful, historic towns that surround us in one great package.
