Swim Across America Makes A Splash In North Salem

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – The Swim Across America event at North Salem’s Lakeside Field Club on Sunday was a huge success. The weather was perfect for the 57 enthusiastic swimmers, ranging in age from 6 to 69, who swam a total of 40 miles.

“We were so pleased to see so many families with young children swimming together for such a wonderful cause,” said event organizer Deirdre Coughlin. “The swim really made an impact on everyone, and the kids definitely were aware of why they were swimming and raising money.”

Swim Across America is a nationwide fundraising program to benefit cancer research. Eight sites in Westchester host the swim on various dates. Participants swim set distances to earn money donated by sponsors.

The 57 swimmers at Lakeside on Sunday raised more than $13,000, well above the $10,000 goal. Beneficiaries will include New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Cancer Support Team of Westchester.

“Lakeside is honored to be a part of Swim Across America,” Coughlin said,  “and we look forward to hosting our third annual pool swim next year.”

Future Swim Across America events include the Long Island Sound Open Water Swim in Larchmont on July 31 and a Lake Isle Country Club pool swim in Eastchester on Aug. 4.
