Swim Across America By Way Of North Salem

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – North Salem’s Lakeside Field Club will host northern Westchester’s second annual Swim Across America starting at 7 a.m. July 22. The swim is open to everyone, and it's not too late to sign up.

Swim Across America is a simple fundraising strategy to raise money and awareness for cancer research, said event organizer Mary Cate Devey.

“Basically, all you have to do is go for a swim with sponsors backing you,” she said, adding that finding sponsors can be easy. “It’s hard to find someone who hasn’t been affected by cancer.”

Swimmers in the nationwide fundraiser range from backyard pool paddlers to world-class athletes.

Volunteers who join as part of the Lakeside Swim and Dive team raise a minimum of $250, individual volunteers raise $500 or more. Swimmers can choose between a mile, a half-mile or a relay.

Participants get a shirt, a towel, a bathing cap and breakfast. “You can swim in honor of someone special to you,” added Devey.

Beneficiaries of this year’s swim are Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, Sloan-Kettering Hospital and the Cancer Support Team of Westchester. Last year, the combined earnings of the eight Westchester Swim Across America events came to more than $1 million dollars.

The Lakeside Field Club is on Brookside Lane at Peach Lake, North Salem. For more information about the event, contact Deirdre Coughlin at Phoebesc@computer.net.
