Gianella Solorzano was presented the Mariano and Clara Rivera Scholarship on Friday during a ceremony at the college's campus, officials said.
Solorzano, who during her tenure at New Rochelle High School began an award-winning anti-bullying campaign and was active in a church youth group, was honored as a “highly motivated woman with a strong academic record who is committed to important outreach work for her school community,” according to officials.
The four-year scholarship will cover Solorzano’s tuition, room, board and fees so long as she maintains academic excellence and stays active in the community, officials said.
“We are so proud to have Gianella as the recipient of the second Mariano and Clara Rivera Scholarship here at the College of New Rochelle,” said Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dorothy Escribano. “She brings strengths and skills developed through her accomplishments that will contribute greatly to the college community.”
Solozano said she was appreciative of the award.
“It is amazing to get this scholarship. This financial support is a big weight off my shoulders,” she said, later adding, “The Riveras are like mentors to me. I’m looking forward to getting involved on campus.”
