9/11 Victims to be Honored at North Salem Fire Station

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - North Salem lost one resident in the 9/11 disaster 10 years ago. Lt. Vincent Halloran was a New York City firefighter who led his men in the evacuation of the North Tower. He had just celebrated his 20th year with the New York City Fire Department.

Lt. Halloran left behind a wife, Marie, and five sons. Not long after the tragedy, Mrs. Halloran gave birth to their sixth child -- and first daughter. The baseball field at Volunteer Park (adjacent to North Salem High School) is dedicated to Lt. Halloran. The Halloran family still lives in town.

On Sunday, September 11, the Croton Falls Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a remembrance ceremony in honor of all 9/11 victims at the Titicus Road fire house, across the road from St. James Episcopal Church. It starts at 3 p.m.

“It’s become a town tradition,” said Karen Roach of the Ladies Auxiliary. “We usually get around 100 people. The Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts are invited. We also sent invitations to the local church choirs and the pastors and the North Salem High School choir.”

The keynote speaker will be local octogenarian, Herb Geller. Hamburgers, hotdogs and beverages will be served. It’s a time for neighbors to get together and get reacquainted,” Roach said. “Everyone is welcome."

“This event is all about bringing people together, but it is very much a memorial service. Besides Vincent Halloran, lots of local people lost relatives and friends in 9/11.”
