A Bit of Broadway Glitter in North Salem

There is nothing like a dame -- or a guy, if they are kids performing in “A Little Bit of Broadway.”

The Theater Arts Studio production, in conjunction with the North Salem Recreation Department, is on Friday night -- for one night only.

Barbara Rue, a former Radio City Rockette, is the show’s choreographer and one of the founders of Theater Arts. She explained that the show is "actually a workshop. It’s our first production and we’re doing it to launch the Studio.”

Performers range in age from 10 to 25 and most are from North Salem. There are about 50 members altogether.

“We hold auditions but we don’t turn anybody away,” she said. “We wanted to provide an outlet for all, from those with a fledgling interest to those who are budding professionals.”

Though most kids are involved in singing, acting and dancing, there are plenty of jobs backstage.

Friday night’s performance will feature vignettes from four classic Broadway musicals: The Sound of Music, South Pacific, Annie and Hairspray. Every scene has a set of its own.

Alexandra Walsh, a senior at North Salem High, plays one of the nuns in The Sound of Music. She “loves this production because we get to meet kids from other schools.”

“In the future we hope to do a complete musical,” said Rue, “And we hope to get kids from all over.”

“A Little Bit of Broadway” premieres – and closes - 8 p.m. Friday at North Salem High School. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. For more information call 845-590-9697.
