North Salem High School graduate Steven Siciliano has the Yankee logo engraved on his tombstone. Siciliano passed away exactly one year ago at the age of 22. He is already being memorialized in several ways.
There will be a mass at St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Ridgefield this morning at 8:30. And from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the first annual blood drive in his honor will be held at the North Salem Ambulance Corps.
Steven needed so much blood in his last few days, said his mother, Ida Siciliano, and it was donated by total strangers. I want to repay their generosity.
She got the idea of the blood drive when she attended one in honor of Elizabeth Butler, who was killed in Croton Falls six years ago. Elizabeth and Steven were in the same high school class.
Steven fought a lifelong battle against Cystic Fibrosis. But he always had a great attitude. He was a great person -- and he maintained a B+ average! his mom said.
Because of that, the family has established a college scholarship fund in his honor. It will be awarded for the first time at this years North Salem High School graduation.
The recipient was chosen because he or she has had to confront adversity but has managed to overcome a difficult situation, Ida Siciliano explained.
The name of the recipient will not be announced until graduation day.
The Ambulance Corps building was chosen for the blood drive because it is right off Exit 8 of Route 684. The Sicilianos are hoping donors will come from all over to honor Steven and to help save lives.
