Brewster Library Officials Seek $3 Million Expansion Of Library

BREWSTER, N. Y. -- While Brewster Public Library officials want to move quickly on a plan to double the size of the library building, some Southeast town leaders say they want to slow things down a bit, The Putnam Examiner is reporting.

Brewster Public Library officials are hoping to get voter approval for a tax increase to help pay for a $3 million renovation and expansion of the library building, The Examiner News says.

Officials from Brewster village and library approached the Southeast Town Board recently asking for a special election on a tax-increase referendum to support the $3 million expansion plan. The deadline to get a referendum on the November ballot has passed, The Putnam Examiner says.

Several town leaders indicated they would not support a special election for the referendum, citing the costs and difficulty of getting people out to vote. One Southeast official suggested library officials make sure all aspects of the expansion are needed, The Putnam Examiner reports.

Library officials say the project would bring the building up to 8,000 square feet and make the library better able to meet the need of patrons. It's estimated to cost an additional $32 per year for the average homeowner, The Putnam Examiner says.
