NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Although North Salem’s new Peach Lake Sewer System was completed several months ago, its symbolic ribbon-cutting occurred on Oct. 27, just two days before the arrival of Hurricane Sandy.

Many individuals and various groups were officially thanked during the ceremony. These included Town Supervisor Warren Lucas and the Peach Lake Coalition, a group of residents who were the moving force in implementing the replacement of 470 deteriorated domestic septic systems with a reliable sewage treatment plant for those same properties.

The campaign to improve the quality of North Salem’s Peach Lake started more than 40 years ago, said Tom Duffy of Vail’s Grove. Funds were raised through several government agencies. When the money finally came through, the Peach Lake Coalition had only three months to file and get approval on all the paperwork and set the project in motion before the funding deadline arrived.

Among those who received certificates of appreciation for their dedication to the project was Peach Lake resident Charlie Voelkl. Voelkl’s grandson, Michael Robson, 13, was one of two boys killed when a tree crashed onto a lakeside house during Hurricane Sandy. The other was Jack Baumler, 11.

The families of the two young friends have written a joint letter of thanks to the North Salem community and to specific volunteers and neighbors who assisted in trying to save the lives of the injured. The letter appears in The Daily Voice’s Opinion page.
