DANBURY, Conn. -- The Black Friday night incident that created panic at the Danbury Fair Mall during the busiest shopping day of the year occurred when some mistook toppled tables and chairs in the food court during a fight by teenagers for gunfire, according to a report by LoHud.com.

Facebook posts beginning after 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29 by families in the area said people had to run out of the mall because of a shooting. Police said no gun or bullet casings were recovered, according to the LoHud report.

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton tweeted at 7:32 p.m. that a fight was under control at the mall. The Danbury Police Department and the Connecticut State Police were on the scene, according to Boughton’s tweet. He said there was no evidence of a gun, although others Tweeted about that possibility.

The mall, located off Interstate 84 near the New York border, has been a popular shopping destination for many Westchester residents since its opening in 1986.
