Elegant Edibles at Muscoot

You could say the Muscoot Farm weekly Farmers Market is like a great bazaar -- there is something for everyone and lots of things you thought you would never find.

Take Bombay Chutney, for example. It is based on old and treasured family recipes. Or look at the fruits and vegetables of Connecticut's Newgate Farms . The farm has been family- owned and operated for five generations and that shows in the quality of the produce. Another family-produced product is Kontoulis Family Olive Oil , made from the best grade of olives with no additives or preservatives.

North Winds Farm folks come down from Pawling with lavender and an assortment of beautifully scented items made from it. The Dutch Desserts staff brings tarts from Kinderhook, while the Hudson Milk Company and its milk, cheese and dairy products are from nearby Shrub Oak.

The vendors are not the only ones who travel for the Muscoot market. Louis Pomatico of Smithtown, Long Island, came to check out the wines of New Paltz's Adair Vineyards .

Arika Pevenstein was visiting from Baltimore, MD. She said when she was a child, she spent summers with her aunt in Westchester and attended the farmers’ camp at Muscoot. After nearly 30 years Pevenstein returned to Muscoot on Sunday to reminisce.

"It was a walk down memory lane," she said. "Back then, the campers used to help do the farming. I'll never forget the day a hen laid an egg right in my hand."

Some other vendors at Muscoot include the Clean Ridge Soap Company , selling soaps, candles and lotions, Hummingbird Ranch that offers honey and maple syrup, the Kiernan Farm that sells grass-fed beef, Platte Clove Naturals that sells granola, Side Hill Farm’s jams, Wil-Hi Farm , offering lamb and yarn, Saratoga Peanut Butter and PickleLicious .

The Muscoot Farmers Market is open every Sunday until October 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
