TARRYTOWN, N.Y. - The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board continues its hearings Monday on Indian Point's dual reactors' 20-year license extension.

The highly technical hearings involve three arguments against license extension, called contentions, brought by Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Riverkeeper and the State of New York.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the hearings, which began Oct. 15. However, those not directly involved in arguments or nuclear physicists may find the arguments hard to follow. The pointed and, at times, theoretical nature of the hearings is a far cry from the raucous public safety hearings on Indian Point conducted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The licensing board is the commission's judicial arm.

Hearings will begin at 8:30 a.m and continue daily through Friday at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, 455 S. Broadway, Tarrytown. Courtroom decorum is observed, and placards or signs are not permitted. Although the commission's final decision on whether or not to issue a license is not bound by the board's findings, the three-judge panel's findings generally are regarded as highly significant.

This week, the board will address three arguments, including a challenge to Entergy's monitoring for corrosion in buried pipes and systems, a challenge to Entergy's aging management plan for inaccessible medium voltage cables and wiring and a challenge to Entergy's omission of an aging management plan for safety-related electrical transformers.
