Is North Salem Prepared For Another Hurricane?

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – If another hurricane-level storm arrives in North Salem on Monday, will the town be better prepared than it was last year?

Town Supervisor Warren Lucas says, “We’re in great shape. I met with Kurt Guldan and [Deputy Supervisor] Peter Kamenstein this morning to discuss how to prepare the town for the coming storm. The tanks are being topped off. We’ve bought a few more generators.”

“We’ve already got plans in motion,” said Guldan, coordinator of the Office of Emergency Management. “We’re prepared to open up the Ambulance Corps building if we have to. We’re watching closely. It all depends on the track of the storm.”

After last year’s storms, many residents prepared emergency kits containing important papers, extra car and house keys, medications, a flashlight, batteries, and other items. Things to keep on hand in case of power failure include a three-day supply of bottled water (one gallon per person) pet supplies, tools, insect repellent and many other useful and/or necessary items.

Over the past year, special attention has been given to critical systems in town. “We now have external generator hookups for the Croton Falls and Candlewood water systems,” said Lucas.

Although the Peach Lake Sewer System was not yet in operation when last year’s storms hit, Lucas reports, “We’ve been working on procedures to keep every home’s grinder pumps working in case of a longterm power outage.” The sewage treatment plant itself does have backup generators.

“We count on volunteers to help out, and we have great people in town who are always to pitch in and help out,” said Lucas.
