New York State Police from the Brewster barracks arrested John R. Tarr, of Marlborough, Saturday on charges of tampering with physical evidence, a Class E felony. Tarr was also charged with petty larceny, third-degree criminal trespass and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanors.

Troopers were dispatched to the Shell gas station on Danbury Road on a larceny complaint. An investigation revealed that Tarr removed scratch-off lottery tickets from the business' Lotto display and attempted to exit the store after he concealed the tickets in his pocket, police said.

Tarr was placed under arrest and transported to the Brewster barracks. He was issued an appearance ticket directing him to appear in Southeast Town Court on Tuesday, May 19, at 6 p.m. and released from police custody.

Several hours after Tarr’s arrest, troopers were again dispatched to the Shell station after a report that Tarr had come back despite being advised that he is not permitted to return to the store. Employees told police they observed Tarr retrieving an item from the garbage at that location before leaving the premise on foot. The item he retrieved from the trash was described as a box of cigarettes.

Troopers located Tarr a short distance from the gas station and placed him in custody on a charge of trespassing. Before placing Tarr in custody, investigating officers observed him drop a cigarette box and attempt to conceal it on the ground, police said.

Following further investigation, Tarr was found to unlawfully possess Suboxone and Xanex, police said. He had placed the drugs in the gas station trash, attempting to avoid additional criminal charges, according to police.

Tarr was arraigned in Southeast Town Court and remanded to the Putnam County Jail in lieu of $750 cash bail or $2,500 bond. He was scheduled to return to Southeast Town Court on Monday.
