Police said their investigation revealed that Glenn E. Bennett, 64, of Three Lakes, Wis., was driving the 2016 Seagrave pumper truck eastbound on I-84 near Lime Kiln Road when he suffered some type of medical emergency that caused him to exit the road on the north shoulder, and cross the median before striking several trees.

Bennett was transporting the new fire truck from Seagrave Fire Apparatus in Wisconsin to the Islip Terrace Fire Department, which had purchased the truck, according to police.

The accident backed up traffic for hours on the interstate.

Bennett was taken to Danbury Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
