Murphy, Michaelis Call for Audit of BOL

SOMERS, N.Y.-- Republican candidates for county legislator, Peter Michaelis and Terrence Murphy, renewed their call for an audit of the Westchester Board of Legislators Thursday afternoon.

The pair, who previously made the call for the audit in August, said they wanted an independent audit of the board, not an internal one that is done each year.

"Basically, this is part two. When I took office in Yorktown as a town councilman, one of the first things that I asked for was an independent audit, not an internal audit,” Murphy said.

Murphy, who is running for legislator in district four, said the independent audit would show how money is being spent by the board, just as it showed how money was being spent in Yorktown.

Murphy and Michaelis referenced an article by The Journal News, which cited the board’s spending on travel, food and cell phone costs in 2010.

"We are the highest taxed county in the United States of America, and we need to find out where we can cut, and trim the fat. The first thing we need to do, which I think is the appropriate step, and Peter Michaelis and I are in full agreement on this, is to audit the Westchester County Board of Legislators,” Murphy said.

Michaelis, who is running for county legislator in district two, echoed Murphy’s sentiments in saying before either of them looked at future budgets, they would need to see how the county was currently spending money.

“We need to have a better understanding of this, and the audit will give us just that,” Michaelis said. “The county Board of Legislators say they go through their budget line by line, and I intend to do the same, but an audit will tell us where we are, and where we stand.”
