This is the day to throw back the covers, pull on your running shoes, and hit the road, the track or the treadmill. This is National Running Day.The first Wednesday in June is dedicated nationwide to runners and running. The idea is to get out there and demonstrate the benefits of this simple, inexpensive sport so that others are encouraged to try it.
According to North Salem track team member Taylor Cotter, Running is more than just a sport. It is a lifestyle. Its something I can carry on after high school. Taylor is a senior this year and will be going to Bucknell in the fall. Its a great way to release stress and stay healthy, he said. Its such a natural thing to do. You dont need equipment. You need a pair of shoes and youre good to go.
North Salem Girls Varsity Track Coach Damien Holst explained that running releases endorphins in the brain. Its been proven to keep people happier. For kids, its an outlet for their [excess] energy. When is the best time to run? Its better to run in the morning, Holst said. It gives you energy for the day. At night it will keep you up. Running not only makes you feel better, he added, it makes you look better. And when you look better you feel better about yourself.
