North Salem Adopts Single-Stream Recycling

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- North Salem has adopted a new single-stream recycling plan that is expected to save the town at least $75,000 a year and lower the town's tax by 1.4 percent.

As of Sept. 1, City Carting has started to take all recyclables from North Salem to its new plant in Stamford, Conn., where the recyclables will be sorted and resold to companies that need raw materials to make new paper, metals and plastics. This process is called single-stream recycling.

Residents can continue to put out two cans, a garbage can and a recycling can. By using City Carting’s single-stream plant, residents will no longer have to sort recyclables. City Carting will do it for customers. The town hopes to increase the amount it recycles to 40 percent of total household waste.

Starting sometime after Monday, Dec. 1, people who are not separating the recyclables out of the regular garbage will get an "OOPS!" sticker on their garbage, and the garbage will not be picked up until the recyclables are separated.
