The girls, from North Salem Girl Scout Troop 1054, put finishing touches on the mural on Wednesday afternoon, which included placing hand prints covered with blue paint onto the project. Additionally, their first names were painted on.
The mural was for the scouts’ Bronze Award, explained Debra Rei, who is one of three leaders for the troop. The other two leaders are Nikki Pakula and Jennifer Binette.
“This is the culmination of our bronze award,” Rei said.
Rei attributed the idea for the mural to PQ Principal Mary Johnson, who by coincidence was doing research on a map project called Peaceful Playground.
“They couldn’t wait to start,” Rei said.
Work on much of the mural was done during a day in August, Rei recalled. The mural also includes a booklet with games that can be played with it, she explained.
The scouts, who are former PQ students now attending North Salem Middle School, began planning for a Bronze Award project when they were in 4th grade, Rei recalled.
The girls will move up from Junior Girl Scouts to Cadets at a meeting next month, Rei noted. She also discussed what the next scout awards would be, which include the Silver Award and the Gold Award.
The troops' members who are involved in the project are Mia Castellano; Jillian Rei; Hailey Videla; Danielle Pakula; Maddy Martabano; Allison Outhouse; Ashley Binette; Alexandra DePaoli; Abby Mascia and Ava Jolley.
