North Salem: Good Morning, Irene

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Hurricane Irene has been downgraded to a tropical storm, with 65 mph winds recorded at 9 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Heavy rain and flash flooding continue to threaten our area. Rainfall may still reach as high as 12 inches. Weather.com also warns of possible mudslides. The possibilities of disaster continue, even after the storm moves past the area.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to ease up at about 3 p.m. Sunday. Clouds and winds will continue. Temperatures will remain in the upper 60s.

Early this morning Supervisor Warren Lucas released a message advising all roads in North Salem are currently closed to traffic. Only emergency vehicles will be permitted.

Meanwhile, he has contacted NYSEG, who will send three crews to North Salem to help clear trees.

It is important to keep roads clear so that emergency vehicles can get through. Many trees have fallen around town, some on homes, but so far no casualties have been reported.

As of 10 a.m., NYSEG reported 1,864 homes without power, of the 2,388 NYSEG customers in town.
