"It's adorable," Susan Koch of the Croton Falls Fire Department said. "They sound the siren and you hear them coming. The kids come running to say hi to Santa. They get candy, it's a fun small town type of thing."

Koch said the fire department is very community oriented and does events throughout the year.

"They really do love the community," Koch said. "They love getting out there and meeting people."

While the fire department if often involved in serious situations, they enjoy showing off their lighter side to North Salem residents. Koch said firefighters clamor to be included in the Candy Cane run.

"There's only so much room on the truck," Koch said. "We can only have so many helpers. The firefighters really get into it. They love to get involved."

The training and commitment to be a volunteer fighter can be intense, Koch said.

"I never realized how much time and effort they put into it," Koch said. "It's nice for the town to know how much they care."
