North Salem Native Brings Work Home To Katonah Museum Of Art

KATONAH, N.Y. -- The Katonah Museum of Art's new Collage Center might feature artists from around the world, but at the center of it all is North Salem native Pavel Zoubok.

North Salem native Pavel Zoubok is the founder of the International Collage Center, which is being featured through October at the Katonah Museum of Art.

Zoubok is the co-curator of Remix: Selections from the International Collage Center featured through October at the Katonah Museum of Art. Zoubok, who was born and raised in North Salem, currently works as the founder and artistic director of the International Collage Center in New York City. While he is excited about the new exhibit, Zoubok said it has been special to bring his work "back home" to Westchester.

"For me it's a wonderful opportunity to present this area to a community I grew up in," Zoubok said. He added that the exhibition is a homecoming for Westchester as he spent time in North Salem, Cortlandt, Cross River and Mount Kisco as a youth. "These are very much my old stomping grounds and it's a great opportunity to tie my working life back on my home turf."

Zoubok said the exhibition is part of a launch of years of work with the International Collage Center.

"What we've created is the first ever research organization dedicated to researching the culture and the art of collage," Zoubok said. "The collection is a jumping off point for a whole range of programs we're doing and to start that off in Westchester is very special."

Zoubok said he's had a fascination with collage since his childhood and hopes that visitors to Katonah take away the greatness the medium can achieve all the way down to grade school projects of gluing pictures cut out from magazines.

"One of the things that definitely emerged from the talks of the opening of the show in June is that we're in a moment where so many ways we engage with the arts is mediated by the technology," Zoubok said. "I think when we really look at the conceptual roots of that new-tech culture, it's all defined as new terrain. To me, it's about look at how we came from Picasso to Facebook."

Remix runs through October 13 at the Katonah Museum of Art, which is holding special exhibits throughout the run. For more information on Zoubok and the International Collage Center, residents can check out the group's website.
