NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- On Friday at about 10 a.m. a New York State registered late model Mazda RX8 heading north on Route 22 was clocked on police radar, driving at a speed in excess of 100 mph. The vehicle failed to comply with orders to stop and managed to escape.
According to police, an hour and a half later, a motorcycle, driving south on Route 22, was clocked at 88 mph. The speed limit is 40 mph. The biker was stopped and issued a summons.
The following items were also reported by police:
An anonymous telephone caller on July 30 complained of a dog that had been tied to a tree without water and had been barking for hours. The investigating officer proceeded to the Titicus Road area and advised the owner to bring the dog inside. The officer reported that the dog appeared to be in good condition. Water and shelter were reportedly available.
At about 10 a.m. on July 31, a cyclist on Titicus Road hit a pothole and flipped over the handlebars, striking his head on the road. He was wearing a helmet and was conscious but complained of pain. The North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported him to Danbury Hospital.
Later on July 31, police were called when a young man succumbed to a possible overdose of prescription medicine, which he had been taking for post-operative pain. The NSVAC aided and transported him to Northern Westchester Hospital. The following day the victims father reportedly stopped in at police headquarters to express his thanks for the assistance.
On August 1, a woman complained that she had been receiving harassing telephone calls from the mother of her former tenant. The calls involved a dispute regarding the original security deposit. The property owner allegedly said that the apartment was left in a dirty and damaged condition. The security deposit would have to be reduced by the cost of cleaning and repairs. The parties were advised to contact civil court.
Mid-afternoon on August 2, police received a report of an intoxicated male on Front Street in Croton Falls. The responding officer spoke with members of the NSVAC, who reported that the man had fallen and hit his head, suffering a contusion. The man was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital by the NSVAC.
A Titicus Road resident called police around 5:45 p.m. on August 2 because he said he had been stung by a bee and was concerned about a serious reaction. The NSVAC responded and checked the man, who then reportedly refused medical attention.
On August 3 around 8:15 a.m., a motor vehicle struck a deer on Bloomer Road, near Starr Ridge Road. Police were called to the scene to euthanize the animal. Police Chief Thomas Howley explained that when a deer is accidentally killed, the carcass is often donated to the Wolf Conservancy in South Salem, where the meat is used to feed the wolves.
On August 4, a shop clerk on Front Street in Croton Falls reported observing a customer remove a container of motor oil from a shelf and place it in a bag. The customer allegedly purchased other items with a credit card, but did not pay for the motor oil. He was reportedly contacted by telephone and paid for the oil by credit card.
North Salem Police responded to several burglar alarms during the first week of August. In all cases the premises were checked by police and found to be secure.
