North Salem's Horse Lover, Masseuse and Whisperer

North Salem’s Key Burns is a woman of multiple talents. She is a licensed massage therapist, a Reiki Master, a Shiatsu expert, an aromatherapist and a First Aid and CPR teacher for the American Red Cross.

While she is happy to work with humans who may need her services, she is even happier when the patient turns out to be of the four-legged variety.

Does your horse spook? Is he startled by certain sounds? Does he ache from something the vet cannot identify? You might want to call Burns. She  feels she has a special relationship with animals, a sense of what they need. “It’s like having a conversation,” she says. People call her up and say, “Can you talk to my animal?”

She is even consulted by long distance and has dealt with animals as far away as Australia.

In a more “hands-on” sense, Burns goes to horse shows and makes the rounds of a number of local stables, performing her magic. Many owners arrange to have her visit regularly.

Just as with humans, horses benefit both physically and mentally from an hour of deep tissue massage and stretching exercises. Regular massage can also assist in injury recovery.

“The horses are the clients,” Burns explains, though it is the owners who pay the bills. She also works with dogs and cats and an occasional wild animal.

If you have a yen to personally connect more deeply with your pet, you can attend one of her workshops, held in North Salem.
